If you clicked on this article, you are probably currently suffering /or have suffered from a lack of slumber for some time now and are probably desperate to try something new! If you care to look for a natural way to increase your melatonin, I may have just the thing for you to try that does not include taking random sleep aids. I am anti-med whenever possible, so when I was having issues with my sleep, I stumbled upon the secret health benefits of bananas and its magnesium-rich peels. This simple recipe provides you with a natural brew that can have you sleepy in as little as just one cup. Yes, I have tried it, and noticed a difference the first week.

Think of Bananas as a superfood because it is perfect for an entire day of necessary nutrients. Although it is high in sugar (be careful) it gives you optimum energy in the form of Potassium in the morning, and contains the Magnesium you need to cure your sleeplessness at night. If you seem to be suffering from insomnia, you should talk to your doctor about checking your vitamins and minerals. I am a massive advocate of holistic medical efforts and honestly believe that our bodies have the potential to naturally correct a lot of the simple issues that we may suffer from. In this case, magnesium deficiency is known to contribute to insomnia by maintaining healthy levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep and relaxation. It is also well known to relieve the symptoms of insomnia through decreasing the cortisol (stress hormone) in your body that can keep you up all night. If you suffer from major anxiety or stress, Magnesium can be the perfect supplement to help regulate numerous mental and nervous systems disorders as it pertains to anxiety, fear, nervousness, and irritability.

Disclaimer* Always talk to your doctor before taking new supplements because everyone's body is different. That said, bring it up at your next doctor's appointment.

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure that you're using an organic banana. A non-organic will work, but bananas are heavily sprayed crops, and you don't want pesticides in your tea.

  2. Don't go, overboard. Too much Magnesium can lead to nausea and diarrhea both, of which, are never fun.

  3. Make sure your banana is ripe! Yellow with spots is even better, as these have their healing properties that you can read for yourself here.

  4. Boil ONLY the peel. In my opinion, this is what has the most Magnesium in it. Bananas are full of Potassium, so if you're taking it to sleep, you may want to just use the peel. If you are looking for a natural daily supplement, then boiling the banana with the peel may be a viable option.

Recipe for One Cup of Tea:

  • 1/2 banana peel, including (or excluding) the banana

  • 1 cup of water

  • optional: honey and cinnamon

Instructions:

Combine the washed, organic banana peel and water into a small pot. Bring to boil. Simmer. I boil for about 10-12 minute, and strain (optional) into a mug. Dress it up with extras (optional) like; honey, cinnamon, lemon or whatever and enjoy!
